Alternatively, there's a guy named Eric Tischer who's making AC controllers for EVs, and will be selling them on Ebay. You can google him, or read my interview with him here.
Update 2011: Eric's busy doing other things these days.
But good news, too: the Curtis 1238 can be programmed to control the AC-50 that HPEVS makes for electric cars, and this motor-controller combo costs a lot less. HPEVS sells them as a package.
